* 동명사의 관용적 용법 *
It is no use crying ~ = It is of no use to cry ~
There is no ~ing = It is impossible to ~
It is no use crying over spilt milk. (엎지른 우유를 가지고 울보불고해도 소용없다.)
= It is no use to cry over spilt milk.
There is no telling what may happen tomorrow. (내일 무엇이 일어날지 말할 수가 없다.)
= It is imipossible to tell what may happen tomorrow.
* Examples *
1. 그 여자가 나를 유혹하려고 해도 소용없다.
It is no use her trying to tempt me.
2. 그들이 제 시간에 오리라고 기대해본들 무슨 소용이 있을까?
Is it any use expecting them to be on time?
3. 사람의 취미(취향)는 도저히 설명할 길이 없다.
There is no accounting for tastes.
4. 이렇게 나쁜 날씨에 외출할 수가 없다.
There is no going out in such bad weather.
* 독해 *
1. There is no satisfying spoiled children. It they see the moon reflected in a pail of water, they must have it.
* satisfy = 만족시키다/ spoiled children = 버릇없는 아이들/ reflect = 반사되다
(해석) 너무 귀여워해 성격을 버린 아이들을 만족시킬 수는 없다. 그들은 물통에 비친 달을 보면 그것을 꼭 가지겠다고 떼를 쓴다.
2. It is no use trying to run away from difficulties, for they are sure to overtake you. Face the boldly, and they will often vanish.
* be sure to ~ = 틀림없이 ~하다/ overtake = 따라잡다/ face = 직면하다/ vanish = 사라지다
(해석) 어려움으로부터 도망치려해도 소용이 없다. 어려움은 틀림없이 너를 따라잡기 때문이다. 어려움을 용감하게 맞이해라. 그러면 흔히 그것이 사라지는 법이다.
