Are Same-Sex Colleges Still Relevant? (클릭)
Last week, the board of Sweet Briar College, an all-women’s school in Virginia, announced that it would be permanently shuttered in August due to “insurmountable financial challenges.” The school’s president, James Jones, Jr., attributed the close, in part, to the declining number of “young women willing to consider a single-sex education.” Is there still a place for same-sex colleges? Do they play an important role in education, or are they outdated?

1. The Best Place for Me
여자에 대한 혐오와 폭행이 우리 사회에 존해하는 한, 여대와 같은 열린 환경은 여전히 유의미하다.
As long as misogyny and violence against women exists in our society, open environments like
women's colleges remain relevant.

2. The Success of All-Male Schools
사회가 종종 남학생들에게 기대하는 것이 적을 때, 그들을 가르치고 성취하게 격려하는 것에 헌신하는
기관은 여전히 중요하다.
Institutions solely dedicated to teaching and encouraging males to achieve — when society often expects
so little of them — remain important.

3. Same-Sex Schools Perpetuate Notions of Difference
우리가 진정으로 남학생과 여학생의 공평한 경쟁의 장을 원한다면, 그들은 진정한 성별 통합된
방법으로 자라고 교육되어져야만 한다.
If we really want women and men to compete on even playing fields, they have to be raised and educated
in a truly gender-integrated way.

4. The Freeing Powers of Single-Sex Education
남녀분리 학교는 흑인과 라틴계(특히 미국에 사는) 소년들이 편하게 느끼고 그들의 감성을 표현하게
만들어 주며, 남성성에 대한 일차원적 이미지에 대한 생각을 바꾸어 준다.
Single-sex schools allow black and Latino boys to feel comfortable and express their emotions, changing notions
about a one dimensional image of masculinity.
